I am currently working on a Ph.D. project with Rolf Koford and Dave Otis focusing on bird responses to vegetation diversity in restored grasslands in Northwest Iowa. Specifically, we are evaluating plantings of varying diversity ranging from single species plantings of non-native cool season grasses (smooth brome) to warm season native grasses (a 5 species mix) to reconstructed prairie (over 40 species of grasses and forbs). In addition to estimating the density of adult grassland birds in each of the field types, we will estimate both nestling growth rates and nest success of birds breeding in the study area. In addition, we will use radio telemetry to evaluate the habitat use and movement of fledglings.

I completed my M.S. degree at Iowa State in 2006 studying butterfly responses to prairie restoration using fire and grazing in the Loess Hills of Iowa.

My research interests are in the area of restoration ecology and fire management. I am interested in how management and restoration decisions affect habitat and wildlife in grassland ecosystems.
